My lovely wife passed away at 10:30 this morning. She had a long slow decline from breathing complications that started at around 4 in the afternoon on the 4th. Perfectly fitting as she always loved fireworks so much in fact that she tried to talk me in to having our wedding on the fourth of July. Take a moment to think of her when you see the sky light up. Last night was by far the hardest night of my life (which says a lot), but the peace that remained and the knowledge that the pain is gone was truly awe inspiring. Orion and Naomi will go down in my list of saints forever as they stood by me through all. The children got to hold their mommy and whisper sweet nothings into her ear one last time as I called them home from the forth of July festivities when I became sure that she would cross over soon. She was well medicated but responded to them in a way that was painfully beautiful to watch. I have been up since 6 am yesterday and am grieving the loss of my best friend, but know that I am lucky to have shared the kind of love we had with her. If you want to know how you can help, you can… Pray for us, give us some room to grieve, hug your children like never before, and if you want to share $ I will be dividing the paypal donations between a trust for the kids, summer fun for the kids and clays child care.

I am so sorry to bring you sadness

Kelly

My heart is heavy for what you must be going through right now Kelly, and your children in their grief. I am a long time blog reader as Andrea has touched me with her writings in ways I can not describe. Her legacy will live on forever in you and her children. I wish you peace and love in the coming days. From across the lands, I send you many prayers.

  10. Oh Kelly, I am so sorry to hear that Andrea is gone. I have come to love her simply by reading her “online journal”. That really says something about her don’t you think. My prayers are with you and your family at this time and I will see what I can scrape together to help you defray some costs.
    Love and God bless,
    Shaun

    Kelly,

Our eyes are filled with tears, and hearts full of sadness, yet we are so glad that Andrea, you, and the kids were able to be together through her last moments, and that her passing was peaceful. You are truly surrounded by Saints and Angels, as I’m sure Andrea is now too. We’ve called Barbara, Wendy, and Sue & Joe, and they all send their love as well.

    We’ll talk soon.

    Bill & Karen

  12. Helen says:

No words to express my grief and sadness..just tears, prayers and kind thoughts for you and your family and friends for sharing this wonderful lady with all of us. Andrea’s legacy (well besides a life well lived and a beautiful family) will be to have raised awareness of this often misdiagnosed cancer. As a RN/nurse practitioner student and practicing lactation consultant, her story has inspired me to learn more about this illness so that if I ever run across it in practice, I will think of Andrea and know what to do.

    Peace to all of you.

  13. lizz says:

  24. Chrissy(Jenny Ball's sister) says:

    Kelly & Kids,

I am sorry more than you know. Andrea was a wonderful woman and will live on in all our hearts. I woke up the morning of July 4th and couldn’t sleep. I wanted to express what I was feeling in my journal so I wrote a poem for all of you.

    Independence From Pain

    She lays awake
    longing for her independence
    her independence from the pain

It has held her in bondage
for so long, far too long
    sleepless night and endless days
and so she lays awake and prays

    she thinks to herself
    about so many things
    never never knowing
what the next day would bring

    so with each new dawn
    it gets harder to fight
so when she feels it is time
    her soul will take flight

    so many will mourn her
we will all feel the pain
but she will finally be free
from the very thing causing her so much pain

    a declaration of independence
    independence from the pain
her soul soaring like a bird
    in the misty morning rain

I love you guys……so does Patrick, Troy, Memaw, Pop pop and Nana. Thank you for letting us help with Clayton. I told Jenny to let us know what we can do. You are in our prayers.

    Love Chrissy

  32. Aimee says:

I knew it was coming, but am sad at how quickly. Andrea cried out from her spirit to be in the presence of the Lord and He answered. So in that I am thankful. But I know that this is just the beginning for the rest of you- the beginning of your life without Andrea’s presence. I have no words of wisdom to offer, no insight, and even my prayers are more like cries. You will need time to shut the door, pull the curtains and work through the grief. I ask God to give you all the time and space necessary for your family to connect, to each accept one another in how and when the grief is expressed. And I’ll keep reading as long as you keep writing, Kelly (and kids). You have a special place in my heart.

You don’t have to worry about this today- the road ahead is long. But I wanted to let you know, since you mentioned money and I know some of the kids are of the age and want to attend college, that the Susan Komen foundation offers $10,000 college scholarships for children who have lost a parent to breast cancer. Also, if you need or are wondering about any other types of social service (I am sure hospice can also guide you in this way), you can always call the American Cancer Society. They may have information about grief counseling for the children, if it becomes a need, and/or funding for that.

I’m sorry if it seems off-track to be laying that out here now. I just don’t have any words of wisdom and whatever words of comfort I could gather seem so inconsequential compared to the shadow of your grief. So the social worker in me is doing the only thing I really know how to do from a distance- I wish I could do something more tangible……………

  33. I am so sorry for your loss.

  34. Kelly,

We are so very sorry for your loss. Marc and I cried with her last post and cry with you now. I know we don’t know each other well but please know we are here if you need us. You are in our prayers.

Thank you for your generous gift of time the other day… both yours, the kids and Andrea’s. I will never forget my last laughs with Andrea.

    Our love,

    The Foxxes

Kelly-Today we celebrated Owen’s third birthday, and we requested that guests bring gifts for your family instead of for the birthday boy, who already has so much. For the past 2 years, we collected for local and other charities, but nothing really felt closer to our hearts this year than Andrea, your family, and what you have been going through. I was excited to share this news with Andrea, and come for another visit to give her the gifts. I went online in the middle of the party to show my brother the blog, and that’s when I saw Andrea’s final blog. My heart is hurting, even though I am happy that she is finally at peace. Please keep us updated on plans for services. We would still like to visit with you guys in the near future to give you the gifts Owen collected from friends and family. While I know you have an incredible support system over there, please know that we are here for you and the kids. Now, 2 weeks from now, 2 months from now…whenever. I am off for the summer and happy to help out wherever I can. Much love, Dina

Thank you for keeping us informed. I never talked to Andrea, and I just found your blog in the past week, but I still found myself in tears when I read that Andrea was gone. I feel touched by her life, even in that brief time. I can’t imagine how hard it must be, even with the relief of knowing she is no longer in pain. I will keep you and your little ones in my prayers.

  48. Deb says:

Kelly, please PLEASE do not apologize for ‘bringing us sadness’. I (we) owe you and Andrea and the kids so many thank-yous for opening your hearts and allowing total strangers into your home, your lives, your wisdom and your pain so that we all might be inspired and left better people for having “known” you.

  55. Maureen says:

    Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Your wife and your family have changed my entire outlook on life. You are beautiful people. Thank you for giving me a chance to get to know you. My thoughts are with you through this very difficult time.

    Kelly and family….
Every day when I checked the site, I held my breath. Knowing that one day would be The Day doesn’t make it any easier now that it is. I always tried to convey to you and to Andrea what was in my heart for her, but words are puny sometimes. In a world where we all struggle being authentic, Andrea gave us the greatest gift–herself, unadorned. She lives on in each and every one of us, and that, my friend, is true immortality.

  83. Juanita says:

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

    ~ Kahlil Gibran

  92. Allison says:

I am so sorry for your loss. I started reading her journal about 2 weeks ago, and having lost my mother to cancer at the age of 13, have been totally moved by the postings. Andrea had such courage and strength, now she is at peace. I know it is hard now, but you will always have a guardian angel….
Kelly, you and your family will be in my prayers.

She is at peace now. Love to all of you. Elaine

We are so sorry for your loss. It is a loss for all of us. Our family is truly saddened by Andrea’s passing. She was not only a mom and wife to you all but a sister to me and an aunt to my girls. We have longed to reach out to her, but never had the opportunity. Peace be with you as you grieve.

I do not know you all personally but my daughter Alexis is a friend of Alec’s. I learned about your wife through Alexis and read her blogs often. We pray God’s peace for you and your family at this time. I thank you, your wife and children for opening up and sharing such a private situation.

    The Whitley Family

  101. Jennifer says:

    Dear Kelly & Family,

I happened upon this inspiring and beautiful journal through a member of the Young Survival Coalition. I only wish that I had had the opportunity to meet Andrea during her time here. Andrea’s courage, strength, and unwavering faith has inspired me to continue to evaluate how I am living as I heal from my own diagnosis of breast cancer.

Andrea is the person that all of us yearn to be – breast cancer patient or not. I am glad that she is at peace, but I am so truly sad that your family has to endure this time of grieving.

I am sure you are very aware of the many countless people Andrea and your whole family have touched with sharing this journal and journey online. What that has done is priceless. We all need such testaments and stories of faith.

Thank you for strengthening mine. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

God Bless you and keep you in his embrace,
    Jennifer

  102. tracey says:

  104. Linda Conley Soffer says:

5 years ago, very unexpectedly, my dad had a stroke and was in a coma for 10 days then died. It was around midnight when we got the call from the hospital (my sisters & I had just left an hour before, at the urging of the nurses) and my mom & 3 siblings & I got in the car & drove to say our final goodbye. I remember vividly sitting in the backseat on that drive and closing my eyes & wishing for our car to be hit violently by a truck, for all of us to be gone in that instant, so that none of us would have to face the pain and reality of the loss of our beloved father. It was the seeming enormity of the totality of all our suffering that was overwhelming to me. And it hurt really bad for a long time, and sometimes still does. And I can honestly say it has helped me to live my life more fully, honestly, and courageously. It has led me to realize that every day is a gift, that things are neither “good” nor “bad”, just some are harder while others are easier and more fun, that love and and an open heart are the keys to happiness.

It has helped me to believe that I can move mountains.
I have faith that you will, too.
    Peace to you all,
    Linda

  105. Lita says:

  109. Heather Goldberg says:

I’ll be keeping your family in my thoughts. I am so sad about this and I didn’t even know Andrea. It is so wonderful that all of her children got to be there with her at the very end. And this journal was such a great idea. She has left all of you and all the rest of the world with an incredible legacy. Please take care of yourselves.

  110. Blayer Pointdujour says:

I’ll be praying for your family. Andrea will be missed.

  111. Krissie Tarkowski says:

    im sorry.

  112. Kelly, I just went through your family’s story and found the beach portraits, and was just so in awe of them all. I don’t think I’ve seen a series of images so brimming with love. I feel like I know all of you, like I can imagine the spirit of her living on through each of you.

She’s the kind of woman and mother I wish I could have called a friend.

Take care of yourself in the next while, just drink in those kids and watch for magic. I know of the peace of which you speak… I’ve seen it too. I also have a night like that in my history, and despite not being remotely religious, there was a light and a mysticism that was both entirely unexpected and so strongly present that I could have reached out to touch it. It’s changed the way I see the world, and I can tell you now that Andrea’s already done that herself, too, for so many of us.

I see that new kalaidescope set of eyes as my son’s gift, and I know that with Andrea’s legacy of love and verve, she’ll leave her mark on you, too.
    love and peace to you…

  113. Alison says:

Extra prayers for you and your family. May God give you the strength to carry on and to be there for the children.

  114. As sad as I am that she has passed, I am glad that her pain is now over and that she is at peace. I wish you and your beautiful family strength. Thank you all for sharing this journey with us.

She was without any doubt an exceptional woman, who has left an exceptional legacy and exceptional husband and children. With love to you all, Victoria xxx

  132. Brandon says:

I have never met you. I did not even know you existed until somebody mentioned your wife at Circle of Hope yesterday.

And yet, my heart is broken for you.

And my heart is broken at the words of Andrea’s final blog. I have been severely wounded over time by the actions of many people who were and are close to me. Resolution at times seems impossible to come by, even as I try my damndest to be honest with myself. Letting go has been the most difficult lesson thus far in my journey through this life. I cannot fix everything, and even now this awful knowledge witholds from me the one thing that makes life worth living, that makes all struggles worth enduring, that enriches the love I feel for my future wife and cures the numbness brought on by repeated emotional batterings: happiness.

And as I struggle, so painfully, to make that decision, the decision to be happy today, your precious Andrea is with me, helping me.

Thank you, Andrea, for learning these lessons so that I may learn them also. You may well have saved my life in the twilight of yours.

  133. Mary Beth says:

I was so very sad when I heard of Andrea’s passing. I have been following your family’s journey for quite a while and wept for all of you – you, the children, and your friends and family – when I read your words and Andrea’s words. Because of all of you, I have hugged my children more, prayed more, and loved more. I am so sorry for the devastating loss of Andrea and everything she was to each of you.

  135. Kippy says:

I never commented here before, but only found this page from another friend on Multiply, who has been reading your wife’s blog for a while. I never knew the words to use, and I still don’t, but I am so very sorry for you and your family’s loss of such a vibrant, intelligent, amazing soul. But I am so very glad that she has finally found the peace she so deserves.

I wish you strength and the ability to smile again soon.

  136. I just heard about Andrea’s passing from a friend. I never got the chance to get to know you guys but I’ve spent the last few hours reading every single post on this blog and, in an odd sort of way, I feel as though I have gotten to know something about your family and I sat here with tears streaming down my cheeks as I read the last few entries.

I want you to know that I am sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you and your family. Know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers. And know, if nothing else, that Andrea still watches over you every single day. She has touched so many lives through this blog. She will never, ever – not for a single moment – be forgotten.

I’m so sorry for your loss, Kelly, and my heart goes out to you.

On behalf of the Meredith School Family, I extend our deepest sympathy. Andrea was an inspiration to us all. I have known her and watched her children grow for many years. Andrea’s memory will live on through her wonderful children. Although her life was much too short, she left the world a better place because she left us six great children to carry on her dreams.

Please know that we are here if you need us. Asa, Tucker and Baily have my email address. Please stay in touch.

    May God bless you.

    Sincerely,

  156. Chris says:

Have been reading for months am so sorry thought thids poem might be meanigful to you at this time it meant a lot to me when I lost someone dear

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun is set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that once we shared,
Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must make,
And each must do it alone,
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,
A step on the road to home.

So when you are lonely and sad at heart,
Go to the friends we know,
Bury your sorrows in doing your deeds,
Miss me, but let me go.

  162. Kelli says:

I just began to read Andrea’s messages and admired her will and
stamina. Her writing skills are immense and enjoyable. She will be missed greatly by a wonderfully loving family. God has begun her next life, peace and happiness. I lost my father this year and have had many events of him in my life. He was my best friend. a veteran of two wars and had heart disease from his 30s. He always put us first and he is in heaven building a house for us. It began to snow(very unusual) as I walked out of the funeral service. I felt an overwhelming love I know coming from him at that moment. I hope you have a similar love message from Andrea. Bless you as you grieve. It will be a growing time for you and Andrea in her new life.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I never met Andrea, yet her blogs touched my heart. It is awful to lose someone at such a young age, let alone a mother and wife. It may behoove you to look into taking this blog and publishing it. The lives it has touched online is only a portion of what could be reached in print. She was a beautiful woman with a strong heart and a soul too kind for this world. The days, months, and years ahead should serve only for you to make her memory stronger. Never forget!

  185. Alyssa Lose says:

I am truly touched. My best friend died in 2005 leaving behind 4 children. She was not as vocal about her illness and not willing to except her fait until the final 3 days. I’m sorry for your families loss. She was a wife, friend, and true lover to you. Andrea was a mother to her 6 chlidren, A Sister to Stacy & Myself, and a daughter to Donna and Mark. Everyone of her extened family is grieving with you. If there is any assistance her sibblings or the Klayman family can do to help out, please let us know.

I know I have many memories of Andrea, Stacy and myself growing up. Maybe learning more of Andrea’s childhood years and seeing tons of pictures you’ve never seen of ANDREA might help in this tough time.

    From,
    Andrea’s Brother DARYL

I am so sorry for your loss. As a teacher at Meredith, I have been fortunate enough to know and watch the Collins children grow over the years. But the lessons that I learned from them over this past year far outweigh the academic lessons that I offered them. They have handled this ordeal with courage and respect and have been wonderful models for us all. You all have my profound respect. All my love. Mr.S

  195. Kelly and family,

My name is Lisa, I was online checking my fathers guest book to see if anyone new left a message. (he passed away last month) I just happened to read your wifes obiturary, clicked on the website and spent the last 3 hours reading every blog I could. I am so sorry for your loss. I laughed, cried and sometimes felt angry reading all the postings. I know she suffered, I know she was in a great deal of pain. I can only imagine she is at peace now, no more suffering, no more pain. Her story obvisously touched so many people, even people she never met. I live in Kentucky and plan on sharing her story and website with all my friends. Her legacy does live on, please know I will be thinking of you and your family. Again, I am so very sorry. You will be in my prayers forever. Lisa

  196. She was beautiful. My heart goes out to you and all she left behind. I just read her last post, and she was truly remarkable. May God Bless you!

My heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Andrea’s family and friends.
I met Andrea only a few times but this journal has been an incredible inspiration to me.
My son and I are in southern Mexico and the night of the 4th. there were fireworks here for the celebration of the precious blood of Christ. Yes, even here the heavens lit up to welcome Andrea.
Faith in God is a natural force of life here and church is a truly spiritual sanctuary.I have been praying and lighting candles in these sacred places for all of you to find peace and comfort in this very difficult.

  198. Liz says:

Dear Kelly and family – I am so sorry for you and your family’s loss of Andrea. Her grace and the inspiration she has provided are a blessing to us all. While I only had the chance to speak with her a few times at Circle, each encounter was joyful. I pray that God’s grace surrounds you and your family at this time and that you all feel his presence and comfort now and always.

Kelly, God bless you and your family. I am so sorry. To know Andrea, even just the very little bit that my husband and I did, was to know someone who touched our lives forever. We will never forget her. Your strength as a family inspires me and I will keep praying for all of you.

  202. Jan says:

I hope you can catch your breath, and take in nothing but peace.

She was beautiful. I have never lost a best friend before. I am sorry for you. The empty bed and the loving touches, I would miss it too. I really hope that her essence never leaves. But that honestly, you will be filled back up somehow. Take care and she was really loved and touched many lives. She was here for a purpose, and she fulfilled it. Oh how proud that must feel to you. You were blessed to know her. You did a great job taking care of her too. Jan xx

    Kelly

I have thought for days for the right thing to say. I just don’t know what to say. There are no words that can express my sadness for you, the kids, for all of us really as Andrea was truly a beautiful person. I was honored to have had the chance to meet Andrea and immediately saw why you fell in love with her. She was a warm, inviting, and beautiful women. I am sorry that Wayne and the boys did not have a chance to meet her.

I am happy that she is no longer in pain and that she is in a better place. I know that my Dad will take good care of her and together they will watch over us all.

Kelly I am so proud of the man and father you have become.

    Alec, Bailey, Jesse, Tucker, Asa

Thank you for sharing your mother with all us via her blog this past year. I am sure that you don’t remember me from your mom and Kelly’s wedding but I sure remember you. I was so impressed by how beautiful you all were – So loving, smart, grown up. I told your mother she must be doing a wonderful job raising you all – she said “God gave me great kids” She was right you are great kids.

If you ever find yourself in Seattle you will always have a place to stay with us. And you will always be in our hearts.

    Clayton

I am so honored that your mother gave the world you before it was her time to go. I am excited at the thought that some day you and my boys will meet for you are the only Smith cousin they have.

I will be thinking of you all tomorrow during the service and wish I could be there with you all.

    All of my love
Cousin Holly (those were the first words Andrea ever said to me as I stepped through your door – ” Cousin Holly” with a big hug) She was vibrant and beautiful and that is how I will always remember her.
